Our very first time staying in the cottage was at Christmas (2010), and even amidst the chaos of getting the cottage ready for rental it was a really special time.

Briston is such a great place to base yourself for Christmas, as there are so many festive attractions and events all around.
Some of the highlights are the Christmas fairs at Blickling and Felbrigg halls – we managed to get to Blickling last year, and as well as seeing the Hall decorated as it would have been in Victorian times, we also got to enjoy the gardens by floodlight, and to meet baby reindeer!
Holt Christmas lights are another ‘must’ – just as much for pre-Christmas shopping as for getting into the Christmas spirit.

You should also investigate the Christmas Spectacular just down the road at Thursford, which has now become a national institution – bringing in more than 170,000 visitors a year from all over the country.
Cromer Pier – the only pier in the country still staging a summer-special show, also puts on a Christmas special through December.
Christmas at Blickling Hall
You’re probably getting the idea that there is no shortage of things to do by now, but one other holds a place in my heart – the Santa Specials on the North Norfolk Railway. I met Santa at the end of a steam train ride when I was about 7 years old, and still remember it well to this day!
On to the practical side of things – you will be cosy in Oaktree Cottage whatever the weather, with central heating throughout, and a cosy wood-burning stove in the lounge. The well-equipped kitchen with dishwasher will mean the Christmas dinner isn’t a stressful affair if you cook for yourself, and the Three Horseshoes pub around the corner (or any of the other fabulous pubs nearby) mean that you can always let somebody else take the strain!
